The National Labor Relations Board ruled in favor of Northwestern University in a dispute on Monday, effectively blocking the school's football team from organizing a union and preventing the players from entering the workers' compensation system.
The players secured a declaration from the board's Chicago regional director in March last year that they were employees and thus entitled to wages, benefits and the right to unionize. Northwestern appealed, arguing that the NLRB doesn't have jurisdiction in the case, and on Monday, the national board agreed.
