Virginia lawmakers have introduced bills that would eliminate a cap on benefits provided to first responders with post-traumatic stress disorder and exempt the Workers’ Compensation Commission from some formal rulemaking requirements.
Legislation enacted in 2020 exempted police and firefighters from the requirement imposed on all other workers to prove that post-traumatic stress disorder is accompanied by a physical injury or the result of an unusually shocking event. The 2020 measure allowed police and firefighters to receive up to 52 weeks of benefits for their PTSD claims.
