Peace Corps paid $41 million over five years to reimburse medical expenses for 3,305 returned volunteers who suffered illnesses or injuries related to their service.
The most common illnesses and injuries among returned Peace Corps volunteers receiving workers’ compensation benefits included mental, emotional and nervous conditions; dental problems; and infectious or parasitic diseases, according to an Oct. 30 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
