A bill that would provide broader workers' compensation benefits for first responders diagnosed with mental stress is on its way to the governor again after lawmakers adopted changes.
House Bill 438 and its Senate companion, SB 561, were approved by near-unanimous votes in the House and Senate in February. But Gov. Ralph Northam recommended several changes, including requirements for better mental health training and standards, and establishment of peer support groups in fire and law enforcement departments.
