The Travelers Cos. on Tuesday touted what it called the first predictive model designed to control the cost of treating chronic pain caused by workplace injuries.
Travelers said it has patent pending on its Travelers Early Severity Predictor, which identifies the likelihood of an injured worker developing chronic pain to help avoid the condition and reduce the need for opioids and other painkillers.
Dr. Adam Seidner, national medical director for Travelers, said patients who develop chronic pain are prescribed opioids and other painkillers 90% of the time.
