Sole proprietors in North Carolina would be required to have workers’ compensation coverage at all times, under legislation introduced Wednesday in the General Assembly.
The coverage requirement for sole proprietors would apply even if they have no other employees, under terms of House Bill 183, by Rep. Kelly M. Alexander Jr., D-Mecklenburg.
The bill would also declare that a sole proprietor is not absolved of the requirement to have comp insurance by performing work under a contract that provides coverage.
