State attorneys general on Thursday announced a $573 million multistate settlement with McKinsey & Co. for work the consulting firm did to help pharmaceutical companies profit off the opioid epidemic.
McKinsey advised Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, how to maximize profits through measures that included targeting high-volume opioid prescribers, targeting messages to specific providers urging them to prescribe more pills, and circumventing pharmacy restrictions to deliver high-dose prescriptions, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office said in a statement.
