NY - Albany's Loss-of-Use Claims Spiked in 2017
Payouts for loss-of-use claims in Albany spiked by 1,700% in 2017, leaving the city with almost $2 million in payouts to injured city workers, according to a local news report.
But it could have been worse. City officials said a third-party administrator was able to shave $282,000 in administrative fees from workers' compensation claims, the Albany Times Union reported this week.

RI - House Approves Limits on Uninsured Fund Payouts
The Rhode Island House of Representatives this week passed a bill that will limit the amount that injured workers and their dependents could receive from the state's uninsured employer fund.
Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee
House Bill 8215, introduced by Democratic state Reps. Robert Craven and Carol Hagan McEntee, would rename the fund as the Rhode Island Uninsured Protection Fund and would limit benefit payments to a total of $50,000, plus attorneys' fees related to the claim.

Arizona-based CopperPoint Mutual Insurance Co. announced the re-election of four members of its board of directors: LoriAnn Lowery-Biggers, Marc Schmittlein, Donald A. Smith Jr. and Stephen Tully.
The carrier said Lowery-Biggers is an insurance industry leader with more than 25 years of experience that includes serving as president of field operations and chief marketing officer for The Navigators Group Inc.. She also served as the North America president for Lloyd’s of London.
Lowery-Biggers joined CopperPoint’s board in 2015.

Church Mutual Insurance Co. announced Wednesday the appointment of Guy Russ as assistant vice president of risk control. He will report to Kevin Root, executive vice president for operations.

NY - Contractor to Pay Restitution for Failure to Provide Coverage

An Upstate New York contractor was ordered to pay $8,500 in restitution and fines for failing to provide workers’ compensation insurance during a siding and roof repair project in Aurelius, the online edition of The Citizen newspaper reported.
Stephen Pollot, of Waterloo, pleaded guilty Tuesday to failure to provide coverage, a felony. He admitted that his business, D&S Home Improvements, failed to provide coverage for seven employees in June 2015.
