The Tennessee state House of Representatives on Thursday unanimously passed a bill that would create a limited safe harbor provision for contractors that didn’t carry comp insurance for subcontractors that purported to be exempt from the coverage requirement.
Contractors are typically liable for carrying workers’ compensation coverage for employees of subcontractors. However, they’re not liable to carry comp when a construction service provider is listed on the Workers’ Compensation Exemption Registry.
