Mold Prompts 45 WC Claims at Spartanburg Courthouse

Wednesday, November 2, 2016 | 0

A $300,000 mold remediation project at the Spartanburg County Courthouse in South Carolina has prompted at least 45 workers' compensation claims, according to a report by GoUpstate.com.

While the county has spent $300,000 so far, a report by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration received Monday showed that more testing needs to be done, according to the newspaper.

OSHA found mold in two courtrooms within the 59 year-old courthouse. Air quality tests taken Monday by JMAC Environmental cleared the rooms for use. However, a county official told the newspaper that concentrations of stachybotrys mold were found in small concentrations and that additional testing was warranted.

The newspaper said that a contractor for the county completed mold-remediation work in September, but additional work was needed after mold was discovered behind wallpaper in a hallway. That work was completed on Oct. 22.
