The Tennessee General Assembly as soon as Monday could pass a bill that some say could unleash the gig economy, allowing thousands of workers to easily be classified as independent contractors. Critics say it would undermine the state's workers' compensation system.
"If everyone's an independent contractor, they can skirt around paying into the workers' comp system and all sorts of other stuff," said Adren Crawford, political director for the Tennessee AFL-CIO. "It's a huge game-changer."
